SMS – SMPP

The Short Message Peer-to-Peer (SMPP) is a protocol used by the telecommunications industry for exchanging SMS messages between Short Message Service Centers (SMSC) and/or External Short Messaging Entities (ESME). Simply put, SMPP is used to send and receive messages from and to GSM, UMTS, iDEN, CDMA and TDMA cell phones.

The protocol is a level-7 TCP/IP protocol which allows for the fast delivery of SMS messages while it offers a variety of messaging applications. Using the SMPP protocol as opposed to sending messages via a GSM modem has many benefits. For instance, being TCP/IP based means that no GSM hardware is required whereas users can send SMS to a simple shortcode. In addition, as wireless operators, message centre vendors and application developers are constantly creating and developing new applications for SMS, SMPP can act as an access protocol for these.

Our SMPP service supports the industry standard SMPP V3.4 protocol.
